Hey Sailor,

  • November 20th Commodore’s Cup 11 AM 1st Start.  Registration is open for this pursuit race.  You must login to your SPSA account 1st.  Then click List/Search under Regattas drop down.  You can find the  Enter  button and the information you need by clicking the  Docs  button on the Commodore’s Cup line.  If you intend to deploy your cruising spinnaker, make sure you declare your spinnaker chute according to the NOR.  Starting times will be posted by 10 PM on Thursday November 18th.
  • Post Race party under the tree.  Your SPSA Membership gets you and your significant other free pizza and caesar salad. Your crew, if not a SPSA Member can buy in for $5.  Please Please Please RSVP by High Noon on Friday Nov 19th so we know how much food to bring.   TreinenRich@aol.com  We will time the pizza delivery for 1 to 1.5 hours after the race is over.  Probably 3 to 4  PM – no promises. Everything beyond pizza and salad is BYO.
  • We have implemented a sharing cup tradition at our post race gatherings.  If your boat wins the best of the day liquid trophy, you can expect heavy pressure to utilize the sharing cups provided.
  • The next SPSA Series is Dec 4th.  Our Race Committee will be Warrior.
  • We have sailors looking to get their feet on a deck.  If you need crew or could take along another body or two, please let Brian know.  Membership.Chair@spsa.us  Our growing non-boat owning membership has enabled our post race free food.
  • Our next board meeting is Tuesday December 7th.  Watch for details.  This is a good way to find out how your club works, get involved, have say in what pizza we eat and a good way to find a deck for your feet.

Lets Go Sailing!

SPSA Racing tomorrow Nov 6th is a no go

Hey Sailors,
Sorry for the delayed 6 PM decision. We are still seeing gusts forecast in the 25 plus MPH range. No racing tomorrow.
I know that some boats may take tis opportunity to run the KoB coarse tomorrow. Strng winds from the NW are optimal.
Sorry for the bad news on Series racing tomorrow.

SPSA Series Races 5 & 6 Advisory

Hey Sailors,

Please be advised the weather forecast for tomorrow looks pretty grim.  Winds have been forecast to be near 20 with gusts approaching 30.  The good news: successive forecasts, depending on the source, have the wind for race time decreasing.  We will continue the watch and issue a go or no go at 6 PM this evening. If you have a sailing buddy known to ignore these email announcements or just never looks at them, please let them know what is going on.

Stay tuned.

Race Information Saturday Nov 6th & other information

Hey Sailor,

Here’s the race information for this Saturday Nov 6th plus the October King of Bay winner.

  • SPSA Fall Season Series Races 5 & 6 will have Libèlula as our race committee boat.  Thanks to Fritz and Joyce for stepping up.  Chris Dollin and Dee Gill have have volunteered to help out.  The 1st start is scheduled for 11 AM.  Monitor VHF 72 for any last minute instructions. After the race we will meet under the tree.  It’s a bring your own everything event.  We are planning a free food event after the Commodores Cup if you RSVP.

  • We have a few Sailors looking for a spot.  If you have room on your boat for a sailor or two contact Brian Membership.Chair@spsa.us

  • Also thanks to Warrior, Hula Girl, Gimmi Shelter, Amber Looe, and Freelance volunteering to cover the remaining Series Race Committee duty.

  • King of the Bay report.  Last Tango ran the course on Oct 30th in challenging shifty winds.  Her corrected time of 1:04:51 beat all the other reports.  There were none.  If you don’t run the course, you can not win a KoB Flag.

SPSA Update

Hey Sailor,

Happy Fall and Happy Halloween. There is a fun and exciting fall season coming up. Here’s what’s happening for SPSA:
  • Our next SPSA Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 2nd at 6:00PMAs always the membership is welcome to sit in.  The meeting takes place at the SPYC docks. You’ll find us at the table just outside the harbor master’s office.
  • Our next Series Race is Saturday November 6. Start time 11:00am.  If you haven’t signed up yet, please do. Race Committee boat to be announced. Listen for RC on VHF Channel 72. Post Race get together under the tree, 3:30 – 4 expected start time. Bring a chair, snacks and drinks. We want to take a group picture this time so bring your crew and all their smiling faces.
  • Speaking of photos, we love them. Your Rear Commodore Dan Dawson says the best camera is the one you have in your hand (or something like that). So while you are out there racing or cruising pull that phone out of your pocket and snap some pics. Send them to spsapictures@gmail.com so we can share them on our website, Facebook page and Instagram.
  • November 20th is the Commodore’s Cup race. Sign up if you haven’t already. You don’t want to miss this race. Look for More info in future posts.
  • If you are not a racer, there is a cruising event to Emerson Point scheduled for November 20th as well. See links to details at SPSA Cruiser’s page
  • King of the Bay – there are few days left to run the KOB course and take the flag for October. Don’t forget that this is a monthly competition and you can run it as many times as you want. We love running KOB. It is fun trying to figure out which way to run it to take advantage of the conditions and good crew practice as well.
  • Do you want even more fun? Check out raceQs. It’s a fun way to do a post race analysis and the more boats participating the better it is. See https://raceqs.com/pro-regatta-broadcast/ for more information.
  • Just a reminder that SPSA is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. Take a moment to read the History of the St. Petersburg Sailing Association in the members handbook or on the SPSA website. I know I am thrilled to be involved with a group that has contributed to the deep and rich history of sailing in our area. Let’s keep it alive.
LET’S GO SAILING!
