The poker run was great fun Saturday!  Thanks to past Commodore Richard and RC Chairman Robert for being dealer boats.   Best hand went to Kelsey on Hula Girl, 2nd best hand to Dan on Last Tango, and worst hand to yours truly.

This coming Saturday is series races #3 & #4 with the Octoberfest cookout at the sailing center following the races, around 4:00.  Brats, kraut and sides provided.  BYOB.  Everyone start doing a wind dance now!!   Feel free to come to the cookout even if you’re not sailing.

Here’s a pic of past Commodore Richard showing his club spirit at the Poker Run Party at Courigan’s yesterday.   (I don’t think anyone told him these take a week or so to wear off!!! )

2nd Annual SPSA Poker Run Sat 9/24

SPSA is hosting its 2nd annual sailboat poker run Saturday 9/24 @11:00 am.   This is not a race, rather we will be playing a hand of poker as we have a fun sail around the bay.  We will meet at the picnic tables at the eastern point of Demens Landing to register (look for the SPSA banner) and get the locations of the dealer boats.  There is public parking in the “A” spots by the picnic tables.  After picking up all of your cards at the dealer boats, rendezvous at Courigan’s to draw the final card, have some dinner and drinks.   This event is open to non-member sailboats as well, so feel free to invite your friends.  The entire crew can participate, and you are welcome to play more than one hand.  Entry fee is $20/hand (cash only).   1st place 50% of the pot, 2nd place 25%, and 25% for the worst hand.  If you don’t want to play poker, you are welcome to just come sail around with us and hang out for dinner.

**** We have one “dealer” boat so far, but could still use two more “dealer” boats!!   Please let me know if you would like to do this! ****

11:00     Kickoff meeting at Demen’s Landing Picnic Tables.  Register, get instructions, draw first card

12:00 – 3:00 Sail to card stops.  It’s not a race… Take your time, have fun, eat some lunch, enjoy the sail.

4:00        Rendezvous at Courigan’s to draw final card

5:00        Winners announced

Please RSVP to commodore@spsa.us so we have a head count for cards and tables at the restaurant.

SPSA SERIES RACES 1 & 2

On the heels of Hurricane Hermine and despite an ominous forecast, eight boats took to Tampa Bay last Saturday morning for the first races of the 2016-17 SPSA Series.  The day turned out to be much better than the forecast had predicted and we were able to sail two races.  With the threat of foul weather in the distance, the first race was started.  Fortunately when the weather came through, it turned out be only rain – no lightning or strong wind. However, the upwind start turned into a downwind run before the first mark was reached.  The five mile course was completed in about an hour for most boats.  Because the weather conditions had become ideal for sailing – clear skies and a steady breeze of twelve knots from the southwest a longer course (6nm for the cruisers, 8nm for the spinnaker boats) was set for second race.  The breeze held well for the first 90 minutes of the race.  Unfortunately for the spinnaker class who had longer course, the wind went calm with less than a mile to the finish.  Our SPSA sailors were resolute and stuck it out for almost an hour before the breeze can back and they were able to get to the finish line.

For the race results, check the SPAS website (spsa.us). Under the “Racing” tab click the SPSA Series in the drop down box.

The next SPSA series race will be October 1st.  The races will be followed by our annual Oktoberfest cookout – brats and sauerkraut.  More information about the Oktoberfest cookout will be posted.

Annual Meeting of the St. Petersburg Sailing Association

43rd Annual Meeting of the St. Petersburg Sailing Association will be September 2, 2016 at  St. Petersburg Yacht Club

Please plan to attend the 43rd Annual SPSA Meeting and Awards Banquet at the SPYC.  We will induct new officers and present sailing awards for the SPSA series.  SPYC  will present awards for the Summer Twilight series.

Social hour begins at 5:30pm; business meeting at 6:30.  As we have done for the past several years, we will be joined by the sailors of the SPYC Summer Twilight series (we're mostly all the same folks).

SPYC always treats us well and puts out a fine spread. In keeping with the yacht club setting,  proper attire (business casual)  is requested.

The cost of the dinner is $35.  Please make reservations so we can coordinate with  SPYC.  You can make reservations and payment on line through the SPSA website under the membership tab (www.spsa.us) or simply reply to this email with your number of reservations.  We will accommodate "walk-ups" on a "space available" basis. If you choose to pay at the door, please be prepared to pay by cash or check.

If you have questions, please contact me (richboler@gmail.com) or Gloria Davis (gloriadavis1200@gmail.com)

SPSA 2016-17 Schedule ** Revised **

Please note the schedule change for the St Petersburg Classic Regatta (aka Good Old Boat Regatta) from Jan 14th to Jan 21st in order to avoid a conflict with the DIYC’s Commodore’s Cup which is a boat of the year race.  This will allow those campaigning in the BOTY series as well as DIYC sailors to participate in our premier regatta.   This will be reflected on the next revision of the West Florida Yacht Racing Master Calender.

We are planning some changes this year for the St Pete Classic to make it even more fun than it already is!   *** Save the date 1/21/17!!  ***
