Full Moon Race and King of the Bay Results plus SPSA information

1 March 2021

Hey Sailor!

Here’s a few notes about things just past and a short look into the future of your SPSA.

  • Full Moon Pursuit Results  This happened on Saturday February 27th.  First off, it was a beautiful night.  While it looked like the wind might go non-existent, it didn’t and everyone made it around the course.  How nice was it?  Three boats decided to skip the post race and stayed out on the bay.  We had twelve boats out for the race.  In the spinnaker fleet Warrior took the prize.  In the Cruising fleet it was Cayennita III, Desiderata and Surge finishing in the fluids, in that order.  Just a reminder, your prize, if not collected by our next racing event, will be repurposed.  Our locker in the Sailing Center is too small to store anybodies stuff.

  • February King of the Bay Results  We had four results reported.   Libèlula (pronounced Lee Bay Lula) went all out on February 28th.  They ran the course three times and clocked the top three times.  The forecast was for 8 knots, it was a steady 13 gusting to 17.  My crew on a J-70 spotted Libèlula on the course, were were going around counter clock wise, they were going clockwise.  I like to say my crew clocked the fourth fastest time in February.  See the results dated 1 March 2021, coming soon.

  • Here’s the KoB report from Libèlula
  • On Sunday afternoon, February 28th, 2021 Libèlula (Lee Bay Lula) and her crew (Skipper Joyce, Regular Trimmer James, Recent Trimmer Marc, Guest Helmsman Peter, and Tactitian/Magician Fritz) sailed three King of the Bay runs. The first run started at Little J, and we ran counter-clockwise. We had a building breeze and an incoming tide which set us north as we sailed Little J to “S” with just two tacks. Then a run with 2 gybes to G1, a fast beam reach as the breeze filled more, and a finish at Little J with an elapsed time of 1:02:25.The second run started at “S” and we ran counter-clockwise again. A fast run on port-tack and an even faster reach to Little J left us with a bit less tide push and a close-hauled fetch to the finish at “S.” The elapsed time for that run was 1:00:53. The third run started at “S” again. A port-tack run carried us straight to G1 this time, a close-reach to Little J was the fastest yet. And as the breeze backed a bit and the incoming tide all but disappeared, the last leg allowed us to crack off to a very close reach at the end of the leg! The elapsed time for that was 0:56:29!!!

Spring Series Race Day 2 recap and other info.

21 February 2021

Hey Sailor,

  • It was a blue boat day with Warrior and Cayennita III taking the best of the day trophies in yesterdays Spring Series Race.  So far we’ve had plenty of wind out on the bay.  Warrior had a pair of 1s in the 4 boat spinnaker out yesterday – we need more spinnaker boats.  Cayennita III finished with a 3 and a 1 to beat out Hula Girl’s 1 and a 3 in a tie breaker.  When the scores are tied in that fashion, it’s who ever beat the other guy in the last race that wins the tie breaker.  Being a good sport about it the whole thing , Tony shared a bit of his trophy with Steve who happily drank it.  Nine boats were out in the cruising fleet.  Another great day on the bay.

  • If you’d like to see elapsed and corrected times for any race, here is how to do it.  Go to the SPSA Web Page  http://spsa.us/  on the menu bar click on  RACING , from the drop down menu select REGATTAS, for the race or series of interest, click the  Results  button.  You will see the final results posted for each race with the race number in blue across the top. Click on the blue race number to display the elapsed and corrected time of every boat in that race.

  • I learned how to pronounce Libèlula.  For those who struggle like me, phonetically it’s lee bay ula.  I think.  It means dragonfly in Spanish.

  • Next up, Full Moon Pursuit Race, this Saturday Feb 27th, 6PM start for the slowest boat.  Cruising chute declarations are due on Wednesday, start times and course will be sent out Thursday.  We are requesting everyone on board to wear a PFD.  You must record and post your finish time.  Our post race gathering will be in the Sailing Center parking lot.  Just drive right in.

  • Full Moon course logger.  Brian was talking about this under the tree yesterday.  It’s a phone app everyone can use to track where the other boats were five minutes ago and replay the whole race later.  This is free software.  We have set up a regatta page for everyone to use https://raceqs.com/regattas/80475  Here’s a link to find out more about this cool racing tool https://raceqs.com/pro-regatta-broadcast/

Your SPSA Racing in February 2021

15 Feb 2021

Hey Sailor,

Here’s the information concerning our two races coming up.  I am going to be a little long winded since we have had a few new members join very recently.  We hope to see them out on the bay.  If you are racing for the first time with the SPSA, please send me a note and we will have a handicap for you.  TreinenRich@aol.com  If you can figure out how to register on our web page, even better.  http://spsa.us/  On the blue bar click on the RACING button and select REGATTAS from the the drop down menu.  There is no entry fee. The best performances of the day in the spinnaker fleet and the cruising fleet are rewarded with a liquid trophy at the post race gathering. The post race gatherings are held under the tree at approximately 3:30 or 4:00.  That under the tree is the Centennial Oak Tree at the east end of Demen’s Landing.  To find us drive east on Demen’s Landing as far as you can go.  Eventually you drive all the way around the Centennial Oak Tree.

20 Feb 2021 Spring Series Race Day #2  11 AM Start.   This is the second of four races days.  Two races are scheduled for each day.  Monitor VHF 72.  We plan plan to meet up under the tree after the race.  We had 14 boats in the January race, we expect a few more to be joining us.  Tack Tick is our committee, a Martin 243.

27 Feb 2021 Full Moon Pursuit Race 6 PM 1st Start.  We really should call this a Sunset and Snow Moon Pursuit Race.  The sun sets at 6:30 and the moon rises at 7:04.  The full moon of every month has a name.  In January it’s called a Wolf Moon in February it’s the Snow Moon.  Sail declarations, that would be for cruising chute boats, need to be declared a couple of days early, it’s in the Notice of Race.  You’ll find the NOR in the  Docs  on the Regatta page.  Your start time and the course will be posted and emailed out on the Thursday before the race.    Our post race gathering will be in the Sailing Center Parking lot.  Drive right in and park.
The best place to see a glorious moon rise is on the bay.

1 Feb 2021 SPSA Update

1 February 2021

Hey Sailor,

Here’s what happened and in the the very near future in your St Petersburg Sailing Association.

Libèlula is the King of the Bay for January.  Her elapsed time & corrected time of 1:02:23 & 55:40 were more than enough to take the flag away from Surge.  Surge must have had time to eat a nice lunch on their attempt to hold the flag.  It would be very nice if Surge arranged a transfer of the flag to Libèlula in short order.  See the results dated 1 Feb 2021.  http://spsa.us/ click on the  Racing  drop down and select KING OF THE BAY – RESULTS.  You should check later today.

3 Feb 2021 SPSA Board Meeting begins at 6 PM by means of Zoom.  If you’d like to sit in please send me a message and I’ll get you the Zoom Meeting information. Commodore@spsa.us

13 & 14 February Valentine’s Weekend SPSA Cruising Event For our first Spring 2021 COVID-safe cruising event, we have planned a group sail to Emerson Point, followed by anchoring out on the north-shore of the Manatee River.  Weather-permitting, the approximate schedule will be:

Saturday 2/13

10:00 am – Meet at Buoy G3 (N27° 46.0’, W82° 36.6’) & sail to Manatee River inlet (N27° 32.6’, W82° 40.7’)

5:00 pm – Target time for everyone to be at anchor.  Check in with Kryger/Rose Therese on channel 72.

6:21 pm – sunset & drawing for prizes.

7:00 pm – Dinner on your own on board your boat.  Bragging rights for boat with best aroma.

Each pair of participants should bring 1 bottle of wine & 1 chocolate dessert (for two), packed inside of a closed bag or box.  For the drawing, boaters will bribe cruise director for first dibs to select closed box or bag.  Desserts should be store-bought and unopened for COVID safety.

Sunday 2/14
