The St. Petersburg Sailing Association (SPSA) began in 1972 when a group of local sailors, led by Tom MacTaggart, set out to create an organization devoted to friendly, accessible racing on Tampa Bay. At the time, many sailors wanted opportunities for informal competition outside the established racing fleets.
The first races were simple Sunday afternoon events, organized by volunteers and sailed under the honor system. Participation grew quickly—from 21 boats in the first series to more than 40 within a few months. By August 1972 the group formally organized, adopting a charter and bylaws, and in December SPSA became a nonprofit Florida corporation.
Throughout the 1970s the club expanded its racing program, introduced cruise races, and established many of the traditions that still define SPSA today: volunteer race management, inclusive participation, and competitive sailing in a welcoming atmosphere.
During the 1980s and 1990s SPSA grew into one of the most active sailing organizations on Tampa Bay. Membership expanded steadily, new divisions were added, and events such as the Couples Race, longer distance courses, and invitational races brought sailors together from across the region.
The club transitioned to the PHRF rating system and expanded its race formats to include both offshore and one-design fleets. By the mid-1990s SPSA was hosting major events such as the TransBay Race and collaborating with neighboring sailing organizations to build a stronger racing community throughout Tampa Bay.
In the early 2000s SPSA helped establish the Tampa Bay Yacht Racing Association (TBYRA), working with other clubs to coordinate regional racing series such as the “Champions of the Bay.” The club also expanded educational efforts, hosting race management seminars and sailing rules workshops.
SPSA launched its first website and began using online tools to communicate race results and club news, helping the organization adapt to a more connected sailing community.
The 2010s saw the launch of one of SPSA’s most successful initiatives: the Good Old Boat Regatta, which brought together classic and cruising boats from across the Southeast while raising funds for Meals on Wheels of Pinellas County.
This event evolved into the St. Petersburg Classic Regatta, which became a premier local sailing event and ultimately raised over $100,000 for charity during SPSA’s stewardship.
During this period the club also expanded its social gatherings, sailing rendezvous, and crew-connection programs, strengthening the community around Tampa Bay sailing.
Like many organizations, SPSA faced challenges during the COVID-19 pandemic. While many activities paused, the club adapted with virtual meetings and innovative race formats, maintaining engagement within the sailing community. In 2022 SPSA celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of promoting what its founders called “the noble art of sailing.”
In August of 2024, tropical storm Debby brought high winds and major flooding. While still in recovery mode, back-to-back hurricanes Helene (late September) and Milton (early October) reeked more havoc to our area.
Despite these disruption, membership continued to grow and participation in club races increased.
Today the St. Petersburg Sailing Association continues to organize racing, cruising, and educational events that bring sailors together on Tampa Bay—remaining true to its original mission of accessible, enjoyable, and well-organized sailing for all.
